The Crown Solicitor is required to appear for the Government in Criminal Sessions, the Supreme Court in Appellate, Original and Summary Jurisdiction and the Police Court, and as it frequently happens that two or more of these Courts are sitting at once it is necessary on such occasions for me to provide a qualified assistant to take the less important cases for me.
6. In addition to the ordinary routine work of the Criminal Sessions, Police Court prosecutions, conducting Civil Actions (Petitions of Right &c.), collecting accounts from defaulters of all kinds, drawing up agreements, bonds and all security papers for Government Officers and contractors & of which must increase as the Colony increases, there has an increasing tendency of recent years to refer to the Crown Solicitor for advice on questions of law and fact, which are frequently of a very intricate and difficult nature and require very careful consideration and research.
7. In addition to references received from your office I am repeatedly consulted directly by Officers of the various Departments, especially by the Police and the Public Works Department, and am frequently referred to by the Attorney-General on questions of practice or detail arising out of matters under his consideration.
8. The Sanitary Board is especially authorised to consult me direct, and the frequent and involved changes in the laws and byelaws relating to Public Health and Sanitation render these subjects increasingly difficult and important.
